Mansfield - How we got here !

  1620  The first settlement in New Jersey was in Bergen.
1626our State was divided into East and West New Jersey.
1677Quakers purchased parts of West New Jersey from the Leni-Lenape Indians.

1676Concessions and Agreements Signed
1688Mansfield Township was established as a Constabulry on June 8th.
1770Reformed by Royal charter May 9th, 1770
1798Mansfield Township Incorporated on February 21st
1850Fieldsboro Borough formed within Mansfield township as Fieldsborough March 7th
1852Bordentown Township (including Newbold Island) formed from parts of Mansfield and Chesterfield Townships by Referendum March 3rd
1852March 8th Bordentown and Fieldsboro boroughs became parts of Bordentown Township
1872Florence township formed from parts of Mansfield Township
1877Bordentown city separated from township
1894Fieldsboro bor. separated from township


Today's Mansfield Township is bounded to the north by Bordentown Township, north and northeast by Chesterfield Township, south by Springfield Township and northwest by Florence Township and the Delaware River.
